Is there a problem with Australia's political system? Certainly, there has been a proliferation of political commentary on the perceived dysfunctionality of the relationship between politicians, the media, and the public (covered in some detail by Laura Tingle in her Quarterly Essay entitled Great Expectations) and the current divisive nature of federal politics. The declining membership of the major political parties has been well documented and the polls have proven an expedient means of engaging an increasingly disinterested public. The power of special interests groups has been on display (mining tax, carbon tax) and there has been much said on the threat to independent media. Within this world of negative commentary there is a space for an independent voice from civil society; one that advocates for independent business, the community, and regional development. Voice for Indi aims to become the voice for the people of Indi, and to act as the conduit to our federal representative; to rebuild the relationship between our politicians and the people and create a new standard for politics in Australia.

The Voice for Indi committee was set up by 12 residents of Indi who share a common goal of strengthening the relationship between community and policy-makers. The committee intends to operate as a financially strong and long term organisation. The Voice for Indi will work on two processes: the first is to develop a system for community engagement and provide a new means of political action, and the second is to promote a campaign for an independent candidate. We aim to mobilise a voting public that is well informed and engaged, and develop political representation that is receptive and representative of the broader community.
