The Rendezvous Tea Room 4.01

It is a place to sit back, relax and enjoy a morning or afternoon tea, where you can rendezvous with friends for lunch or enjoy a tea leaf reading. We are now serving Low Tea daily & High Tea on Sundays.

It will take you back to the days of 1940s when those little fortune-telling tearooms once thrived in the inner city of Brisbane. Step back to yesteryear and enjoy the experience.

It all started when Gypsies practiced tea leaf readings after tea arrived in Europe early in the 17th Century. Eventually over time, the practice spread all over the world.

After World War II, it became so popular that woman exploring their intuitive side, regularly read tea leaves with each other and for their families. It was fun, and surprisingly accurate.

It was not long before these small fortune telling tearooms became a trend, like the old Rendezvous Tearoom that was located upstairs in the Brisbane Arcade. Many more started up, like The Rainbow Room, The Mystic Inn, The Gemini Tearoom, The Tropical Inn, The Boston Teahouse and The Tiki Room just to name a few.

In those days it was illegal to do fortune telling as the laws classified it as a form of witchcraft. The only way for these rooms to survive was to have signs saying:

“We are here as mere entertainers and do not profess to tell fortunes.”

These tearooms were always tucked away like hidden gems and you had to rely on word of mouth to find them. They were always busy little hideouts and you would have to take a number and wait your turn, and yes! Police raids were common.

Thank goodness the laws were changed in the late 1990’s.
However, many of these tearooms are long gone, mostly due to high city rents and changing times.

You can now revisit yesteryear and find a new “Rendezvous Tearoom” here in the heart of Woolloongabba, where you can enjoy a Devonshire tea and get your teacup read by one of our daily guest readers.
