At St Joseph's, your child will receive an excellent well-rounded education in a caring environment within the Catholic tradition. St Joseph's is a welcoming school. We respect the differences, richness and beauty of all children and cultures. As a Catholic school, we take Jesus Christ as our model for living and our corner stone. The motto on our school logo is: 'Audio, Video, Disco - Hear, See, Act!' St Joseph's maintains its awareness of the needs of all students and staff and we act to meet these needs.

Our prayer is that every child will be enabled to learn to the best of their ability and grow to their full potential, in the knowledge that God loves them and is creating them in his image. May God bless our school in doing his creative work.

Our Story

The traditional custodians of the land are the Gamilaraay / Yuwaalaraay people.

St Joseph's Primary School was opened by the Sisters of St Joseph in 1896 and in 1995 the Christian Brothers came to teach at the school. The school has its origins in the vision of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, a woman dedicated to the education of the poor, and Blessed Edmond Rice, the founder of the teaching order of Christian Brothers.

While St Joseph's serves the Catholic Parish of St Mary's in the township of Walgett, our open enrolment policy encourages all children to apply to attend our school. 40% of our children are of indigenous origin.

2008 saw an exciting major rebuilding and refurbishment program and the school now boasts 8 new and refurbished classrooms and administration building, with leading information technology facilities throughout, to enhance teaching and learning. In 2012 Senator Matt Thistlethwaite opened our new Multipurpose Hall and the Language Cultural Centre. These new facilities have provided us with great spaces to ensure our students have state of the art facilities in which to work and learn.

St Joseph's Walgett follows the Armidale Diocesan Religious Education Curriculum. The Religious Education Coordinator prepares a detailed Liturgical Calendar for each term in collaboration with the Parish Priest and Parish Pastoral Assistant.

The whole school community participates in the religious life of St Joseph's and our children have the opportunity to attend mass and take part in the sacramental program of the Church, Children are able to prepare for the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.

During the term each class has the opportunity to participate in a class mass. Parents, friends and family memebers are warmly invited to attend these occasions with their children.
