Berry’s Newest Holiday Rental

Opened February 2015

'Saltwater' at Berry built in the late 1800’s combine’s stylish contemporary décor with heritage charm – a truly unique experience.

Berry is the ‘town of trees’ but could equally be known as ‘the town of all seasons’. Autumn welcomes you with a magnificent display as the trees turn gold and amber, in winter the cool crisp air lures you to a welcoming fire, spring is a garden-lover’s dream and in summer you are just minutes from spectacular Seven Mile Beach and the national park. The town is steeped in history and the surrounding countryside is a treasure for bushwalkers and explorers alike.

Prince Alfred street (home of Saltwater) was for many years one of the main thoroughfares of the town. As it was firstly the road to the wharf and was then used by horse drawn bus as a route to the train. Beyond the railway crossing, Prince Alfred Street becomes Wharf Road where the remains of the old crossing of Broughton Mill Creek can still be seen and also the ruins of the “Salt Wall”, built about 1918 in an effort to prevent the high tides proceeding beyond this point.

Prince Alfred Street was one of the first business districts of Berry, a hive of activity where many traders set up shop, Mr Robinson the coach painter, Whiteman the saddler, Mr Kedzlie had the bakehouse, Jack Blow had a builders supply shop, Bobby More had his bookmaker’s shop, while Bill Robinson (who had a wooden leg) ran a saddlery business, Christy Robinson the butcher and the general store conducted by Mr Hawk. In the 1930s Ossie Wiggins opened there as a bakery on the site of what is now the “Sourdough Bakery & Cafe” restaurant. On the corner of Prince Alfred and Victoria Streets (adjacent to Saltwater) stands the former Barracks of the Berry Half Squadron of Lancers, now No. 29 and a private residence. The Barracks were built in 1896 and extended in 1898 by John Hay with no expense spared. From 1825 timber milling was a major industry of the district, indeed 'Saltwater' on Prince Alfred Street was the residence of the Bissett family who operated a saw mill from the rear of the property.
