There are different techniques used to make dreadlocks, however not all are healthy for your hair when creating dreads or maintaining existing dreads. It’s very important you’re aware of the various techniques used so you can make an informed choice when searching for your loctician. The end goal after all is beautiful, healthy and strong dreads and the best way to achieve that is by creating natural dreads right from the start.

Sam Price, owner/loctician/instructor at The Dread Shed, created the technique we are use at Roots of Shiva. It’s a combination of backcombing and crocheting (with a very small crochet hook) to create and maintain Dreads. This produces natural dreadlocks with no wax or any other product used in the process. With this method you can expect to lose between 2cm - 4cm of hair length. Once the dreads have been created, it will be necessary to do some maintenance in the first months to tighten up the Dreads, until they start maturing on their own. Once they’ve matured, they will grow strong and healthy and will then start to dread on their own, requiring less maintenance.
