How many of you love to boogie but suspect you look like a flailing trout whenever you attempt a weekend dance floor?

Perhaps you've toyed with the idea of Zumba classes but felt you may not have the coordination to make it look as good as it seems on the infomercials...?

If this is you, then “No Lights No Lycra” is the event you’ve been waiting for.

WHAT IS 'No Lights No Lycra'?

A concept born in Melbourne and since gone global - there is no light, no teacher, no steps to learn, no technique or coordination required, there’s just kickass tunes and a space for a bunch of people to indulge in free movement.

We hold events every Tuesday night from 7-8pm at the Colossus Reception Lounge, 71 Jane Street, West End, Brisbane.

Help us cover our rent for $6 apiece and we’ll supply you with cheesy beats (Brittany meets Dee-Lite meets Busta Rhymes) and positive vibes.

Feel free to recommend tunes from your blue light disco days, or just tunes you know will get the interior of your bones to shiver with dee-lite.

NLNL is a drug and alcohol free event.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

HI, ARE YOU ON TONIGHT?
YES! We dance every Tuesday at 7PM, rain or shine. The only exceptions are public holidays and a two week break over Christmas. If it's a Tuesday night - we're on.

WAIT...CAN I WEAR LYCRA?
Yes, you can. You can wear whatever you like. Despite the name, lycra is allowed. The lycra in our title reflects formal dance wear - the concept was originally dreamt up by two dancers in Melbourne, who wanted to create a space where they could dance however they wanted without being confined to choreography and formal dance attire. Hence the "No Lights No Lycra" name. I recommend wearing light, loose fitting clothing and comfortable shoes. Bring layers in winter as it does get quite warm inside the venue.

WHO COMES TO NLNL?
Everyone! Our crowd is very broad in terms of age - we get anyone aged approx 6-70. Around 150 people come to the evening on average.

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU PLAY?
We aim to play a diverse mix of music that reflects e ages and tastes of our diverse crowd. Anything from Michael Jackson to Beyonce, Nelly to Madonna, and everything in between. If you would like to make requests please do so via Facebook, or have a chat to us at the door. We try to post the playlists every week on Facebook.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER NIGHTS THAT NLNL IS ON?
Yes - No Lights No Lycra Brisbane SouthSide runs on Monday nights in Bulimba. Tuesday is the only night currently available for the West End venue. NLNL Brisbane is only associated with the West End venue but I am always happy to field any questions you might have about other events and to pass them on appropriately.

HOW DARK IS IT?
It's pretty dark, but not too dark that you can't make out other people. We have never had any injuries. I STRONGLY recommend arriving before 7PM in order to find a place inside that you feel comfortable in, and to orientate yourself to the room before the lights go out. You are allowed to enter after 7PM, but it is very difficult to adjust to the room once the lights are out.

WHO RUNS THE EVENT?
NLNL Brisbane is run by 5 lovely ladies; Caitlin, Andi, Annika, Ellie and Zoe. We are all friendly people who would be happy to answer any questions you have on the door about the event. There are usually 2-3 of us there on the night, and one person usually stays outside on the door until 7:30. Otherwise, we'll be inside dancing!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Please bring $6 cash for entry, and your water bottle.

DO YOU SELL WATER?
No - in the spirit of environmental sustainability, we do not condone the sale of plastic water bottles. We strongly encourage you to bring your own water as you might do for any other fitness class. We do have taps available for you to re-fill your water bottle if needed.

WHERE CAN I LEAVE MY STUFF?
We recommend that you do not bring anything valuable to the session. If you do bring bags, most people just place their belongings to the side of the hall during the event - again, another great reason to arrive before 7PM. Some people prefer to keep their belongings on them during the event. We do have a bag room if you are not comfortable with these other options - please ask about this at the door.

ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED?
If you are happy for your children to come along and think it is something that they will enjoy, then we welcome them. I recommend that young children are supervised by their parents at all times. Again, it is strongly recommended that you arrive before 7PM so that your children are comfortable in the space and you can find a spot to dance together. Some parents even provide their children with glow in the dark bracelets in order to easily identify them - I think that's a great idea. We do not charge entry for children.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?
The rules are pretty simple and are based around respect for your fellow dancers.
1. Please do not use your phone during the event unless in an emergency. The amount of light emitted from one phone is enough to light up the entire venue. If you must use your phone, please step outside or into the lit bathrooms.
2. Please keep talking to a minimum. Talking continuously throughout the event can be incredibly distracting for other dancers, so please keep that in mind when dancing with your friends :)
3. Be considerate of those around you. If you're a particularly enthusiastic dancer, find a space where you can move freely (usually right at the front, or right at the back).
4. We have a lock out time of 7:20. This means no one will be able to enter the event after this time.

If you ever experience inappropriate behaviour from another attendee at No Lights No Lycra we strongly encourage you to come forward and notify the organisers. No Lights No Lycra has a zero tolerance approach to any unwanted physical contact or abusive behaviour on the dance floor.
