As we often hear, people have amazing resources on which to draw in tough times. In the process of counseling we aim to facilitate a person’s search for the resources that will help at a particular time. This can involve listening to the person’s ‘problem’ story as well as looking for exceptions to the problem story- times when the person was able to make a different choice and so find a different outcome. We search for these exceptions and use them to construct a different story, one which will give the person new hope and empowerment for the times ahead. In this way the person is able to tap into his or her own potential or personal power, often giving more choices than were previously recognized.
