That Dreaded Question: “What do you want to be when you grow up”?

It's a question we have all been asked at one point and for some of us it’s a question that we still cannot answer!

As a 6 year old girl I wanted to be a nun not because I had a particular love of religion. It was mostly because I loved wedding dresses and desperately wanted to wear the veil head piece worn by the Catholic nuns at my school. That was, of course, until I found out that nuns could not get married, and there would be no wedding dress!

At age 8, I wanted to be a Lift Operator at John Martins in Adelaide – "third floor going up children’s fashion, shoes and toys”. I remember thinking how lovely the women looked and sounded, plus they sat on a leather covered stool. Mostly, I just enjoyed the ride! And at 20, I wanted to be a Tour Guide for Japanese tourists. I studied the language for 2 years and gained qualifications in Tourism before deciding that I didn’t want to start my career as a golf caddy!

Throughout the years I have aspired to many other professions – air hostess, police officer, social worker, human resources manager, recruitment consultant – the list is extensive. I made some of these careers my reality and in retrospect I realise that it was a great way to obtain the skills and experience necessary for my career passion.

My dream job = Career Consultant.

So while the journey has been perfect for me, I can’t help but think that it doesn’t need to be so long, winding and fraught with difficulty for other people and other professions.
