Mission
“Everyone can be taught how to draw, much like learning how to read and write”. Classes designed for students to gain confidence and new skills, allowing them to take their work to new levels; through learning foundational drawing skills, the building blocks upon which all traditional art is made. To offer opportunities and encourage people to exhibit.

Participants will gain confidence and understanding on how to apply traditional techniques and skills whilst drawing from life. Skills taught include: use of line using either hands, negative space, proportions, light and shadow, tonal realism, colour, composition, how to use the camera as an editing tool when drawing.Experimenting with different processes and techniques; charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, paint, mixed media, print making and collage. It is anticipated that there would be varying levels of achievement within the group (from beginner to advanced) hence the level of instruction would vary from person to person.

Lauryn’s teaching method is classical; where the technique of ‘measured drawing’ is used as a foundation upon which to build individual style. The works of past and contemporary masters are discussed and used as points of reference. Issues of composition, chiaroscuro (light and dark), rhythmic vitality, tonal realism ‘seeing’, eye and hand co-ordination, will be explored as they arise. This approach is similar to the disciplined study of the sort that has underpinned artist’s practice for centuries.

Lauryn Arnott is a professional artist, educator and creative process navigator known for her fun and innovative art workshops, projects and techniques designed to help adult students recover a more spontaneous, playful approach to learning and creating.

Lauryn specializes in drawing, mixed media techniques and printmaking, with a Master of Visual Arts degree from Adelaide Central School of Art. She is a recipient of many art prizes most notably the Association of Commonwealth Universities Art Prize. In 2013 and 2014 was invited to facilitate the art workshops for the Gifted and Talented Children's Association of South Australia, at Flinders University.

‘In teaching I frequently come across students that seem to think that they need to learn to draw before they can create something they might consider a finished art work.‘ Lauryn

Often the student’s drawing abilities are waiting to be accessed as they have been buried under years and years of pre conceived ideas and inhibitions. Student’s are guided and encouraged to explore techniques and intellectual ideas about the images they create. Lauryn also teaches day and night classes at Galley One, Mitcham Cultural Village.

One day Art Workshops
It is an innate in human nature to think in Stories. These specially designed art workshops offer curiosity, theatricality, historical or cultural themes using models that are artists, burlesque performers, flamenco, or ballet dancers. A recent art workshop celebrated the Hahndorf Pioneer Women Walkers as part of Hahndorf’s 175th Anniversary. Participants ranging from 15 to 78 years of age had the opportunity to engage with a historian and the Hahndorf Academy Museum collection focusing on the pioneer women. Afterwards they entered a studio offering an inspiring tableaux vivant; model dressed in period costume with authentic props theatrically lit. Lauryn’s role as a creative process navigator was to encourage the participants of all levels of drawing confidence to enjoy and immerse themselves in a day of experimenting with mark making and expressing themselves on paper. A workshop planned for the end of the year is “Portraiture and the portrait drawings of Nora Heysen”, to be held at the Cedars in Hahndorf.
