The Islamic Women’s Welfare Association (IWWA) started in 2000. It was initially an informal gathering of dedicated Muslim sisters at a rented centre in Lakemba who were committed to providing community services targeted at meeting the needs of the multi-cultural Muslim women (and their families) in the area.

Based on an IWWA survey, there was a need for more Islamic education classes for non-Arabic speaking women and their children as well as social activities and support networks for Muslim families in the community.

On 3rd April 2001, the centre was officially incorporated as the “Islamic Women’s Welfare Association Inc”. IWWA also bought over their rented centre in 2003 with funds from their fundraising efforts and an interest-free loan.

With a membership of more than 500 members, IWWA is managed by a 9-member Management Committee (Shura) and 3 office staff as well as the support of volunteers.
