Honks - Haematology & Oncology Kids online charity auction 1.39

In 2005, 3 year old Connor was diagnosed with cancer and the lives of his family were turned upside down. With his life in the hands of the wonderful staff of Brookman Ward of the Adelaide Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Connor’s mum Judith Jordan and her friend Susan Lewis decided that the only practical thing they could do was to fund raise for children’s cancer charities.

By 2007, Judith and Susan decided that they wanted to directly support the patients, their families and the staff of Brookman Ward and Clinic, and so HONKS! was born.

HONKS! is a community supporter for the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation. This means that the Foundation holds the money that we raise, and it can only be used by HONKS! for projects that are agreed with Brookman staff.

We have provided comfortable beds and chairs for parents, a new TV and DVD players for the parent’s lounge, many toys and games as requested by the Play Co-ordinator and funds towards a leukaemia research project.

Soon a new building project will begin at the W&CH which will provide modern, specialist care for our children suffering with cancer and blood disorders. HONKS! has undertaken to fit out the parent’s lounge, the quiet room and the waiting area.

Every year 65 children are newly diagnosed, and their treatment is usually measured in years. Not everyone is as lucky as Connor, who after 5 years is a lively 9 year old and is now cancer free. We can’t forget that every day other children and their families are facing this struggle and HONKS! still has a job to do.
