The Gowrie Road Hotel is a reminder of Newtown’s beginnings in the Gowrie Shire, which was named after Mt Gowrie located 675m further west. The Chronicle’s records dates back to August, 1867 when the Gowrie Road Hotel was previously known as the Rising Sun Hotel until 1878 when the licence was transferred to the Gowrie Road Hotel. The Gowrie Shire was abolished in 1913 when it became a part of the Shire of Jondaryan until 2008 when this amalgamated with several other councils in the Toowoomba area to form the Toowoomba Region.
