Derinya is a large, well-regarded school committed to continually improving the academic standards and achievements of its students. Our mission, through shared values and high expectations, is to strive to develop a passion for life long learning for all members of our school community. We are proud of our achievements in student health, well-being and engagement and have worked diligently over the years to develop a respectful, caring culture in which everyone takes shared responsibility. We believe that in order for optimal learning to take place our children must be happy and safe. We provide many opportunities in which all children can shine. Our whole school values provide the framework for pro-social learning. These include: integrity, responsibility, respect, friendship, humour and optimism.

The school has a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and inquiry as core subjects and these are supported with quality teaching and learning to enhance the outcomes of all students. Students are encouraged to think creatively, learn about the world they live in, give their best effort at all times and develop their leadership capabilities. Staff collaborative team planning is a key component to improved teaching and learning and we have an extremely stable, connected and talented staff committed to maximizing student potential.

Many co-curricular programs widen and enhance the learning opportunities of students, engaging them in a diverse range of activities both within and beyond the classroom, linking them with the world beyond. Innovation is celebrated. The school is well represented in the sporting arena, performing and visual arts and Japanese. Our newly developed Science Discovery Centre is an excellent addition to our specialist field. Our personalised learning centre PLC provides wonderful timely support for many children for a variety of learning needs including extension. It is a “boost” program staffed with highly qualified teachers and teacher aides, small groups and intensive explicit teaching. A strong focus on information technology further enhances and supports student engagement and learning, and is well resourced with over 300 ipads used daily providing excellent innovative learning opportunities.

Derinya is a 5 star sustainable school and this is a credit to the school community. This year we have acquired the block of land adjoining the school to create further play space. We will be involving student leadership in our decisions around the space and are excited by this amazing acquisition for DEECD. The school plays an important role in the Frankston South community providing a focal point to build community partnerships. Strong links with our wonderful parent body and local community are evident through the tremendous work of the newly elected School Council and our Community Connect Team helping to create a harmonious productive learning community. Our annual Derinya Art and Craft Exhibition features highly on the Victorian Arts Calendar. At Derinya, we all work hard to achieve our best potential and create a positive, vibrant centre of life learning…The Derinya Village!!
