Darling River LAC has a population of 14 400 people. The majority of the 14 400 reside in the townships with scarce population density in the outlying rural areas of the LAC.

The Darling River Local Area Command is situated in North Western New South Wales. The command covers a geographical area of approximately 180,000 square kilometres and encompasses five (5) local government areas.

The command service's a range of communities from isolated rural properties, to villages and small towns. There are a number of major highways throughout the Command, these being the Mitchell Highway, Kidman Way, Kamilaroi Highway, Barrier Highway, and Oxley Highway with direct routes for heavy vehicles travelling to and from Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Darwin.

The main industries within the command are mainly rural, with cotton, fruit and wool industries being a large sector of income and employment. Copper and gold mining also being a significant industry in Cobar, Girilambone and Hermidale. Drought has caused a severe downturn in local economies, with many local businesses being forced to put off staff in the Bourke and Brewarrina areas. Although farming is a major industry in the Darling River LAC, its recent decline has opened up alternative industries, such as tourism.

A majority of the crime in this command is committed within the two centres of Bourke and Brewarrina. Some of the significant factors for crime in the Darling River LAC are illicit drugs and alcohol, however the down turn in the rural economy, low employment opportunities and a lower level of education in some sections of the community are all contributing factors.

This command has no formal or structured ‘gangs’ of any description. However, in recent times there has been the development of numerous youths to gather and commit offences in the Bourke sector. While there is no formal structure or hierarchy, these youths are still committing crimes and creating a fear of crime within the community.
