Relaxation Massage - This style of massage utilises long, flowing strokes, often, but not necessarily, in the direction of the heart. Relaxation massage is designed to increase circulation and blood flow. Relaxation massage can also utilise other modalities such as aroma therapy or hot stones to enhance the effectiveness of the relaxation.

A Deep Tissue or Remedial Massage concentrates on the deeper layers of muscle and fascia tissue, specifically the individual muscle fibres. While these treatments use many of the same techniques as a relaxation massage the pressure may be more intense and specific as it focuses to release muscle tension.

Sports massage is a type of massage that is specifically tailored to sporting injuries or ailments. It is not meant to be a relaxing massage and, indeed, can become quite vigorous at times. Contrary to its name, sports massage is not only utilised by professional sportspeople or people that exercise heavily. It is of benefit to anyone that exercises, even if it is only mild exercise such as regular walking. Sports massage is designed to prevent and relieve injuries and conditions that are associated with exercise. It can often be quite strenuous and is meant to relieve and reduce the stress and tension that can build up within the body’s soft tissues while exercising. It can be carried out before, during, or after playing sport or exercising and uses techniques that are designed to increase endurance and performance, to minimise the chances of injury and, if there is an injury, to reduce the recovery time.

Contractual Tendon Release CTR (sometimes referred to as Friction Massage) also massages and releases the tendon (which connect muscle to bone) the fascia (connective tissue,) and muscle fibres giving it a more holistic approach..

Using Contractual Tendon Release (CTR) along with Contractual Ligament Release (CLR) can cause some discomfort, however it usually only lasts a few seconds but the results can be amazing. This method is also recommended as the most effective method for repetitive strain injuries such as tennis elbow or shin splints.

Choose whatever type of massage therapy you believe suits your needs. However, when choosing a therapist, make sure he/she has the relevant qualifications to treat that need. Look for therapist that not only has these qualifications, but the experience also.

For peace of mind, your therapist should also be a member of a recognised professional body such as the Massage Association of Australia or similar.
