In 1979, a group of hobbyists inspired by a visiting English glass artist, started the Creative Glass Guild, based on the traditions of original medieval craft guilds. They gathered in various venues, before finding their first permanent home in the Presbyterian Church Hall, Oleander Drive, Ashgrove.
In the early 1980s, leadlight courses were organised by the Ithaca TAFE (Tertiary and Further Education) with tutors being Creative Glass Guild members. The Guild became strong enough to no longer need to be attached to Ithaca TAFE and became an incorporated association. Its premises were St David's Hall, Ashgrove.
In 1994, the Guild acquired the Scout clubhouse in Fulcher Road, Red Hill.
Over the years since its beginnings, the Guild has had periods of high and low membership, and still has members from the early 1980s. The Annual Exhibition for members to display and sell work has been held since 1994.
The Guild is a self-sustaining organisation providing skills used in restoring Queensland properties, in a field with diminishing commercial operators.
