From the sundrenched landscape of Sao Paulo to the equally sundrenched landscape of Fremantle emerges Comida Do Sul – the first Brazilian food-truck to deliver a hit of the homeland to both locals and expats alike. Comida Do Sul, roughly translated to ‘food of the South’, supplies Western Australia with the traditional yet exotic flavours of home-cooked Brazilian fare.

Like any institution, fledgling or otherwise, a backstory of cinematic proportions is often applicable, and Comida Do Sul is no such exception. Birthed via a transpacific love story, Comida is the kicking, screaming, wholly captivating brainchild of two souls colliding. When Joel Rees packed his bags and boarded a jet bound to South America he did not expect to be beguiled, then enamored, then engaged to the beautiful and charming Dany Flauzino. After much toing and froing between continents, the pair settled in W.A. where their combined neural-pathways led to the highly anticipated birth of the food-truck. With Joel’s love for Brazilian food and the distance in existence between Dany and her native homeland, the obvious solution was to dish up choripans and samba.
Comida’s menu is select. There are 4 or 5 options to choose from; the beloved hotdog or ‘choripan’, featuring a gourmet spiced sausage nestled within the spongy folds of a freshly baked breadroll. Tangy tomato and onion salsa and sweet pineapple and chili hot sauce are then tenderly added to the mix and finished off with homemade mayo and chimichurri. For those who prefer veg over meat, the choripan’s twin is the equally infamous vegepan, seasoned bean and spinach sausage with all of the above.
There is beans and rice with flame-grilled beef rump and more fresh, zingy salsa – and then there is the coxinha. Unlike any other flavour experience, the coxinha stands alone. Imagine a domed dumpling, almost biblical in its golden deep-fried appearance; the outer shell of batter gives way to molten potato-dough, within which is a submerged explosion of spicy shredded chicken. Crispy shoestring fries and ‘truck-sauce’ are ready accompaniments to any dish and an unfathomably delicious coconut milk and treacle pudding is also available.
Wash it all down with an imported Brazilian guarana berry fizzy-drink or a freshly lopped, icy cold coconut and welcome to Comida do Sul.
