Central Hunter Local Area Command – An Overview.

The Central Hunter LAC covers some 3,500 square kilometres. The geographic nature of this command is diverse and incorporates major commercial, industrial, government, retail, farming and agricultural ventures. The major townships of Maitland, Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, and Beresfield account for the major part of the residential population whilst smaller numbers of residents can be found in the numerous, small rural towns and rural properties throughout the command. The commands population is conservatively estimated to be 109,000.

The Central Hunter LAC sits at the junction of two of the state’s major highways; these being the New England Highway and F3 Freeway. It also has a significant railway infrastructure, with both industrial (coal shipments and port cargo containers) and commuter (intrastate and Country Link) services.

The LAC’s major industrial ventures can be found at Holmwood Business Park, Beresfield, Thornton Industrial Estate and the Rutherford Industrial Estate. Other major industry includes the Capral Aluminium Smelter at Kurri Kurri. There are several collieries within the LAC boundaries, the largest of which is the Bloomfield Colliery at Thornton. The major centres of Maitland and Cessnock host large retails areas including major shopping complexes. There is a very large farming and agricultural industry across the LAC as well as vast areas of forest, bushland and mountainous terrain (Barrington Tops).

A Corrective Services facility at Ceesnock is a maximum security prison with a 460 bed capacity. The Region Probation and Parole Service Headquarters is located in Maitland. The Melbee House mental health care facility is located at the Maitland Hospital.

There are presently nine (9) police stations within the LAC, two of which operate 24 hours, these being; Maitland & Cessnock. The remainder of the stations are are Kurri Kurri, Beresfield, Paterson, East Gresford, Lochinvar, Wollombi and Morpeth.
