Our story – Your experience

The story of Calogero’s 6162 began many decades ago when waves of Italian immigrants, suitcases in hand, arrived in Fremantle by boat to begin new lives full of hope and promise.
The thousands who came were drawn by accounts from friends and relatives that this country, Australia, had so much to offer, particularly for those prepared to work hard and “have a go”.

For many, 6162 – South Fremantle – became their new home.

Among those thousands of hopefuls embarking on an adventure of a lifetime were Carmela who arrived in 1961 and Antonio Noto two years later from Sicily. They married in 1969 and opened “Hampton Fruit Market” on the corner of Hampton and Lefroy Roads. Later, they moved to 320 South Terrace, South Fremantle, and over the next five decades, Antonio and Carmela, together with their four boys, built a thriving family business.

They lived above the premises and after years of hard work and long hours, the Noto family became synonymous with providing its customers with a vibrant market garden and convenience store experience, with a touch of Italy thrown in.

As the years went by, the introduction of big chain supermarkets increased competition, driving family businesses like theirs to look at new strategies and directions. So, in 2015, after 50 years of dedicated service to their store and South Fremantle, Antonio and Carmela decided it was time to retire and take a long-awaited rest.

But what next for 320 South Terrace?

Welcome to Carlogero’s 6162.
Behind our new concept is a group of enthusiastic go getters, bursting with fresh ideas. Each one of us is intrinsically linked to Carlogero’s 6162.
We made a commitment to each other and to you, our customers, to take the business that was built up over two generations and give it the face lift it deserved.

Part of the inspiration was to complement what other local businesses are doing in the 6162 precinct by reinvesting in South Fremantle. We wanted to join this trend and give our business a unique and attractive presence to add to the neighbourhood’s reinvigorated and distinctive style.

Now that our doors are open, the most common question we’re asked is: “Calogeros? How did you come up with the name?”

Remember Antonio and Carmela? Well, the first addition to their family arrived in October 1970 with a birth certificate sporting the name Calogero Noto.

Calogero – or Carlo as he’s affectionately known to locals – was, and still is, the mainstay of the business. His stature and distinctive character, along with his unwavering passion for his hometown, has seen Carlo become a self-made icon of South Fremantle.

So, here we are…Calogero’s 6162.
We hope you like our fresh modern look and extensive range of new and exciting products.
We’ve had a relatively low key launch which has allowed us to personally engage with our patrons, and while our experience has put us in a position to take a particular direction, we remain humble enough to appreciate that we will need to improve and make some changes.

Can we be all things to everybody? Probably not. But we will actively embrace and engage with the many diverse characters that make up 6162.
And what do such characters bring?

Youthfulness and maturity, cultural diversity, varying views, different fashion preferences. The common denominator for us is that all “these characters” who are “you” are part of our community.

So, as we strive to become a location of your choice and preference - whether it be for coffee and cake, fresh produce, groceries, a panino, selecting gourmet ingredients for a home cooked meal, enjoying a snack or refreshment, wanting something more substantial to go such as Nonna’s pasta or lasagne, or simply to say “hello”, ...Calogero’s 6162 is here for you.

We hope you’ll join us on our new adventure and we thank you for your support.

We look forward to sharing fond memories with you all during the years to come while “Celebrating Food, Fremantle and its Heritage” at Calogero’s 6162.

(By the way, you say our name like this: Car-lodge-air-ro’s!)
