Hi Everyone,
My name is Bridie Adele and I just wanted to share with you my story. I come from a single parent family with lots of kids and very low income. My Mum grew our own veggies and she raised our meat. At one point when times were tough I remember eating pancakes for months on end but this didn’t matter because life was simple and it brought us closer together.
When I was in high school I was a chubby (from all those pancakes), unfit, super shy teenager. I worked in a local bakery and surrounded by all that yummy temptation I wasn’t losing weight any time soon. When I got to my final year of school I was asked to get up in front of my class and complete an oral presentation, I was petrified because I was so shy and I refused. I didn’t even care about failing. The shyness controlled my life!
Every decision I made was based around me being so shy and being uncomfortable with my weight. I would constantly be worrying about speaking in front of people and concerned that they will be looking at me. I became more and more withdrawn and introverted and I kept to myself and of course, kept eating. One day I decided to take action and I went to my first aerobic class. I was so inspired by the confidence and healthy life style of the women in the class that I enrolled myself into a course to become an aerobic instructor. Believe me when I say I have never done anything harder in my life! It was so tough that I wanted to quit immediately but coming form a low income background we were always taught if you paid for it, you finished it! And so I did.
I started my career by taking classes at the local gym, it was a small introduction into the fitness world and the largest class consisted on only 12 female participants. I remember the first classes that I instructed in were with another instructor and we team-taught. I would hardly even speak and let the other instructor take over.
In those early days the local army base asked me to take a high-energy class for the school of armor on the base grounds. I was too scared and nervous to face this on my own so I asked if I could team-teach with the amazing lady that thought me to teach aerobics. The class was set to begin at 6am on a Monday morning and at 9pm on the Sunday evening my team-teach instructor rolled her ankle and had to cancel. I was terrified.
I was initially advised that there would be 45 female and MALE participants. Remember the most people I had ever instructed were 12 ladies. As I walked through the doors at the army base the receptionist must have seen the terror on my face and came out with a “You’ll be fine” but it made me feel worse. I walked through the gym floor and to my horror standing there waiting were 169 MEN! I started shaking.
That 1 experience changed my whole life. I can be who I want to be, as I started the class the terror slowly fell away and I became more confident.
I did it! I completed the class and went back a further six times during that year. Looking back, this was definitely the turning point in my confidence. Being thrown in the deep end changed me in the most positive way - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
I am now extremely passionate about dedicating myself to training those that have a desire to be more than they ever dreamed of. Everything starts with you and a voice inside that says why not me, why can’t I look like that and feel that great. All you need to do is take that first step and make the decision to change. The exercise is tough and there will be times where you feel like giving up but the sense of achievement when you reach a goal is second to none.
Your attitude towards exercise, food and life in general will go through a make over like no other and then who knows where your life may take you. It really is amazing and worth the trip. Stepping out of your comfort zone and stepping into realising your dreams is well worth it.
Since I stepped out of mine I have competed in bikini body competitions, started my own fitness business, broke in a horse, instructed and endless number of classes and worked as cabin crew for a short period of time. This is a mental challenge and only you have the tools to make the decision. Who knew that my decision to take a fitness class would lead me to my future. I am evidence that exercise changes your attitude and your life!
