In May 2006 the Australian Food Allergy Foundation was created to fund Australian scientific research into food allergies and anaphylaxis.

Making the difference and giving hope to people of all ages.

We achieve this by:

¥ funding world class Australian scientific research
¥ educating and informing the public
¥ raising awareness about the issues surrounding anaphylaxis
¥ providing resources for management of the condition

Founded by Patricia Ilhan and her late husband, the telecommunications businessman John, our organisation was formally known as the Ilhan Food Allergy Foundation until 2015.

Patricia and John’s decision to make a difference came after one of their daughters was diagnosed with the life threatening condition anaphylaxis. With a generous gift of $1 million the Ilhan’s began a quest to fund Australian medical research into solving the growing incidence of food-related allergies being diagnosed in Australian children.

In our first ten years we have allocated over $2 million through annual research grants to enable Australian scientists to undertake important, and often ground breaking, work. Work to change and save lives.

All grant applications are received and assessed by our Independent Scientific Review Panel. The panel recommends to our Board of Directors the submissions which qualify for funding consideration.

We are registered as a fundraiser with Consumer Affairs Victoria and as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

We welcome corporate partnerships, corporate sponsorships and bequests.

Today we are known as the Australian Food Allergy Foundation to reflect our maturing status as a successful charitable organisation with an expanding national focus. Each year The John Ilhan Tribute Dinner, one of our major fundraising events, is held in Melbourne to recognise the enduring legacy of this visionary man.
