Placentophagy is the practice of consuming one's own placenta. It is only recommended that the mother consumes the placenta. I offer placenta encapsulation which has been an accepted sanitised method of consuming the placenta for those who cannot face ingestion in other ways. Consuming placenta in any form has a profound effect on maternal-infant bonding, and for this reason is highly prized. Placentas have also been reported to have many nutritional and restorative powers which aid in increasing overall maternal health and wellbeing.
Placentas are also thought to contain other several hormones, nutrients and opiods including proteins, iron, vitamin B6, oxytocin and corticotropin-releasing hormone. Oxytocin is the "hormone of love" responsible for contractions during labour. It also has a role in milk production. Therefore placenta consumption has been reported to increase milk production, and help the uterus contract down resulting in more efficient wound healing and postbirth contractions.
Vitamin B6 supplementation has often been used by health professionals in the treatment of postnatal depression as it has a proven role in regulating mental processes and mood. The placenta offers this in natural form. Corticotropin-releasing hormone also plays a role in fighting off baby blues and depression. In pregnancy, the placenta secretes and stores this hormone at high levels, particularly in the 3rd trimester and during parturition. When the placenta is born there is a subsequent transient adrenal suppression which is linked to baby blues and postnatal depression. Consuming the placental within the immediate post birth period of 6 weeks restores this hormone level and aids in the prevention of postnatal depression, and overall emotional wellbeing.
There is also evidence-based proof that placentophagy is a form of opioid mediated analgesia postpartum. This may help with after birth pains but increasing pain tolerance through the opioid pathways.
