Details

The building, which is Mozart’s birthplace, is located in the historic centre of Salzburg, in the Getreidegasse. Mozart’s parents, Leopold Mozart and Anna Maria Walburga, lived here from 1747 on for 26 years on the third floor of the house. The merchant and friend of the Mozart family Johann Lorenz Hagenauer owned the house, also called “Hagenauer house”. Seven children were born in this period but only two survived: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born on 27th January 1756 and his sister Nannerl in 1751. The genius musician Mozart, his sister and his parents lived here until 1773. The flat contained a kitchen, a small chamber, living room, bedroom (birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) and a workroom.

Mozart's Birthplace
In 1880 the International Mozart Foundation established the first museum at Mozart’s birthplace. Every year, the elaborately designed museum draws thousands of visitors from all over the world who are interested in Mozart and his family. The original rooms of Mozart’s birthplace contain numerous exhibits like Mozart’s children’s violin, his clavichord, documents, letters and portraits of the musician. A special exhibition of the International Mozarteum Foundation provides you with authentic insights into the life of the genius musician. The main themes of the exhibition are “Mozart’s friendship with Salzburg families” and “sacred music and veneration of the saints”. The architect and cartoonist of the newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten designed three more brand-new exhibitions: “A day in a life of a child prodigy”, “Mozart at the theatre” and “The Mozarts – a family introduces itself”. Furthermore, you can see original instruments, furniture from Mozart’s time and items of daily use. Enjoy a visit to the birthplace of Mozart in Salzburg.
