Calle Libre - Austrian Street Art Festival 3.57

Das Graffiti und Street Art Festival „Calle Libre“ beschäftigt sich mit urbaner Kunst und den zeitgenössischen Formen von Graffiti und Street Art. Durch die Einbindung von Künstlern aus lateinamerikanischen Ländern in Verbindung mit der lokalen Szene soll ein Querschnitt der globalen Bewegung und der zeitgenössischen Tendenzen dieser Kunstform präsentiert und in eine öffentliche Diskussion gestellt werden.

Im Zuge des Festivals werden folgende teilstücke des Donaukanals neu gestaltet:

Ziel ist es den „Graffiti-relevanten“ Raum des Donaukanals kuratorisch zu bespielen und künstlerisch-konzeptuell neu zu beleben.

Das Graffiti und Street Art Festival wird begleitet von einer Ausstellung an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste, einer Podiumsdiskussion, Workshops und einer Abendveranstaltung. Dabei soll ein theoretischer Rahmen zur weiterführenden Betrachtung des Themenkomplex entfaltet werden.

Bedeutung und Wirkung im öffentlichen Raum

Das Street Art & Graffiti Festival „Calle Libre“ soll zur verstärkten positiven Wahrnehmung des Donaukanals beitragen und als Impuls für einen zukünftig gegenseitig wertschätzenden Dialog zwischen KünstlerInnen und ErhalterInnen wirken.

Die Bewohner von Wien werden eingeladen dem Malprozess bei zu wohnen und sich miteinander zu unterhalten. Dialoge sollen entstehen.

The graffiti and street art festival "Calle Libre" deals with urban art and contemporary forms of graffiti and street art. The inclusion of artists from Latin American countries in conjunction with the local scene is intended to provide a cross-section of the global movement and presents contemporary trends in this art form opening it up to public discussion.

For decades, its' presence has fuelled intense debate among residents of modern cities. Street art is a complex social issue. It is considered by some to be a natural expression that exercises a collective right to the city, and by others, it is seen as a destructive attack upon an otherwise clean and orderly society. Purposefully-designed street art such as Calle Libre along Vienna’s Danube Canal can promote interaction between people, art, and public space.

MMag. Jakob Kattner, born 1984 in Wels Austria, studied Fine Arts and Cultural Studies at the Zurich University of Arts and the Art University Linz. He graduated with honours in visual arts and cultural studies. In 2009 he distinguished himself as project manager for the Youth Initiative "Style Warz - Linz European Capital of Culture". Within the framework of workshops with young people including a concert series he created the design of graffiti walls.

From 2010 to 2011, with a grant from the Federal Ministry of Science and Research in Latin America, the Austrian musician and firmmaker produced the acclaimed documentary CALLE LIBRE. In the course of his dissertation, Kattner lectured at various national and international art colleges and universities including FH Johanneum Graz, Linz Art University, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the UERJ - Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro.

In addition to several short films and documentaries, Kattner has produced a variety of music videos and currently works as creative director for cultural projects in Vienna including the realization of the Street Art and Graffiti Festival DonauKanal in collaboration with the City of Vienna. Kattner also applies his expertise and experience as an advisor to non-governmental organizations.
